The Kimberley, WA 2011 -2012

evening river
holding the days
warmth

stone country
only my body
makes shade

nothing in the sound
of salmon swimming
river camp

bike riding
from treetop to treetop
full moon

one car has past
since a snake was here
bull dust

shifting river stones
to the shape of my butt
no fish

cool now
cant sleep
for stars

evening
dogs struggle
to kill a wallaby

moon viewing
my son points
"moon"

rising moon
how quickly it grows
smaller

Papunya, NT

camel bones
in foetal shapes
the ribs of a live one

spinafex plane
from peak to horizon
wishing god were real

pulling on
the smell of campfire
first light

choosing stones
hoping not to throw
town dogs

knowing the unsaid rule
tasting the mess
in her cooking

starting to see the truth
in her accusations
campfire smoke

having not reached
this desert waterhole
the fear of humans

quiet sounds
of men in darkness
mice fill the flat

spider from the night
here is your house
blowing in wind

more blue sky
the desert turning
back to desert

too vast
to feel a part of
western desert

knowing the mice
will still come
kitchen cleaning

red desert dust
fills the wind
fills the streets

1/09/09

refusing the lift

down the trail

first day of spring

7/9/09

ravens

become black plastic

blowing in branches

silver lining

betrays moon

betrays cloud

10/9/09

café table

empty cup

time wasting

11/9/09

early walk

wind forces hands

into my jumper

park bench

forcing

haiku

pushing through

the forest

spring!

just now

my hangover left

grass of sunlight

12/09/09

finally warmer

outside than in-

bugs fill the house

after so long

one…then another!

lyrebirds by the trail

13.09.09

insect touch pause touch

from the page

to my hand

murmurs and bumps

above for company

wrist watch ticks

25.09.09

watching the mountains

waiting… everything

nothing

telling my wife

salt makes the lake pink

not knowing

amongst the stones

where the stream was

river reds

buckets in the shower

and wilting when it leaves

spring rain

through the water

flooding the paddock

only juncus

unseen and silent

where the clouds are

mountains from yesterday

3/8/09

wind ramp

cold mountain

me

5/8/09

staying to read

the walls

uni toilet

day of dread

morning sun

in the kitchen

tickling the windchime

to make it sing

still night

boarding house

full of fights

full moon

11/8/09

feathers rising

falling

rear vision mirror

15/8/09

sea lapping

the night pier

silent fishermen

cold watching

late leaves stay

oaks in wind

moonlit balcony

hammock shadow

swaying

smoking

white beard

yellowing

22/8/09

willy willy

of plum blossoms

suburb driving

sipping coffee

wind whips up

white caps

purple flowering

underbrush

butcher birds fight

27/8/09

empty tray

where the pizza was

pedro hiding

light slowly

crosses the stream

the wallaby leaves

wind sends

the forest flailing

ocean sound

fire reveals

the old berry farm

corrugated forest

clanging not singing

on the night balcony

wind chimes

getting the lip balm

left on the table

panties from the guestroom

creeping into bed

she wakes

she sighs

below the curtain

hiding the stars

half on his mat

bay before night

waves lap lone footsteps

behind us

pancalac creek

waiting for waves

to open the inlet

cold and still

construction tape shivers

betray the breeze

mad bright world

in the roof tonight

     - down lights

stilled on the path

so tall so young

these mountain ash

life

in the snap trap

leaving…

dancing above

stand-still traffic

   the exhaust cap

sleeping house-

water in whisky

by the heater

toppling tree

upon tree upon tree

  wind upon messmate

someone?

leaves landing

on the driveway

collecting wood-

   pink ranges turn

     purple behind me

still trees

before stars

possums growl out…

1.07.09

light slowly

crosses the stream

the wallaby leaves

wind sends

the forest flailing

ocean sound

13.07.09

fire reveals

the old berry farm

corrugated forest

behind frogs

and forest whispers

traffic’s roar

bushwalk with her

        wanting to leap

            into ironbark fissures

27/3/2009

longing for sea

    walking through

         forest

in silence

and solitude on the hill

waiting…

black fields  splashed green  autumn rain

reading late

  chamomile warm

     on my fingers

cold peak

lonely and waiting

    .. somewhere

balanced on the arm

at nights end

empty tea cup

3/4/09

sun through stream

trout feed beneath

the bubble run

mercy by the wood pile

rabbit with broken leg

with broken neck

6/4/09

farting runs

into diohrea

…smoothly

briefly

  through heavy cloud

    into my heart

11/4/09

peak through clouds:

her knee above

bubbles

forest reverie

into ironbark forrows

evening breeze murmurs

26/4/09

dew covered leaves

to wash my face

breakfast waits

28/4/09

forest at dawn -

   burying a shit

like a person

30/4/09

by the stream

wishing these stretches

were yoga

street light
the wombat not fitting
into the drain

from the end
of a bending limb -
the koala retreats

smell of ants -
crushed where the river
cuts bedrock

dune scrub -
always in the shape
of onshore wind

clear water...
through the bedrock
  over the beer can

to smell
   then look
peppermint under foot

lonely
over nighttime waves
warning no one

walking unaware...
hat full
of daffodils

midday heat
shade beneath the willow
i am killing

low above the yarra
flashing green
a mallard duck

dancing gently
onto the yellow yard
burning embers

barely above
burning mountains
orange moon

stream
over summer grass
the tiger snake
